Besides the day gold was discovered in California, another day that could be considered just as important for helping leap the Golden State and Nevada County into the limelight was May 10th, 1869. This was the day the Transcontinental Railroad was completed and one of the most important dates in California Railroad History.

Why It Was Important

Before construction of this conduit, it took settlers over SIX months via stagecoach at a cost of $1,000 (about $20,000 in today’s dollars) to get to California. Once completed, you could do a coast-to-coast trip in under a week, and the price of travel was reduced by 85 percent! Nevada County is the perfect place to see the history of the “iron horse” in real life and how it transformed the region.

Truckee

One of the key segments of the 1,776 mile long connection was near the summit of the Sierra. It’s what became the historic town of Truckee. It was here that the railroads staged additional engines to help make the final push over the summit. Although extra power isn’t needed now, you can easily experience this segment by hopping on a Bay Area train route. Once here, be sure to check out the Truckee Railroad museum located next to the train depot. Families and train enthusiasts will get a glimpse into the history of railroading in the region.

Donner Pass Summit Tunnels

Just a few miles outside of Truckee, you’ll find another crucial component to making this journey a reality. The Donner Pass Summit Tunnels. These dozen tunnels, over 1,659 feet in length, took over fifteen months to finish. Built by Chinese laborers using hand drills and explosives, it was dangerous work and led to countless deaths. Now abandoned, it’s home to a one-of-a-kind hike that stands as testament to the hard work of the individuals who made it possible.

Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum

Along with the Transcontinental route, narrow gauge railroads were also crucial in providing lumber to the growing cities. The Nevada County Narrow Gauge railroad offers you a glimpse into this particular era of railroading. In addition to the museum, you’ll also find a rail yard and restoration shop. The highlight is Engine 5. An 1875 2-6-0 mogul by Baldwin Locomotive Works was featured in John Wayne’s film “The Spoilers” as well as “Twilight Zone-The Movie.”

From seeing historic trains to a fun and easy way to the slopes, railroading in Nevada County is like nowhere else in the country!

Wildflowers are beginning to stir in the lower elevations, and the snowiest month of the year is about to happen. Don’t miss out on the fun. Take in the bloom in places like South Yuba River State Park or sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine at one of our countryside wineries. Still on the fence? Here’s a small sampling of things to do in March in Nevada County such as our annual fairs or festivals packed full of family fun.

The Buttermilk Bend trail is well known among locals for its spectacular explosion of wildflowers in spring. The display changes every week, so come more than once! Starting at 10 am, join docents as they identify the flowers and explain some of their natural history and traditional uses. Plan on 1.5 hours and 2 miles. Due to the narrowness of the trail, dogs are not permitted on this tour. Appropriate footwear is highly recommended.

Since this is within the South Yuba River State Park, please note there is a permit parking fee. But, if you have a California Golden Poppy Pass or the California Explorer Pass, they are accepted. No National or Federal Park Passes accepted.

On his day in Grass Valley, everyone is Cornish and the blessings extend to dogs too! The fun starts with the ringing bell of Town Crier Paul Haas. From there, the American and Cornish flags rise above City Hall as the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir, directed by George Husurak, leads the national anthems. Events include a pasty toss as well as Cornish Pasty Tasting. The event is FREE, so come to downtown Grass Valley for the day.

Are you tired of going out to the same old movie theatre or bowling alley on dates? Why not try something a little more adventurous? Here are 8 Date Ideas Under $50 In Nevada County. Some even cost nothing! Don’t believe us? Here’s a small sample of exciting things to see and do with that special person in Nevada County.

#1. Get Out And About

Nevada County is one of the most beautiful places in the world to explore by foot. You can hike beside tranquil alpine lakes, admire sparkling waterfalls and granite outcrops, and follow in the footsteps of those miners of ’49.

Look Back In Time

If you hit the trails through the Empire Mine State Park, you can investigate the old gold mining sites and ruins left behind. Alternatively, you could head over to the remains of the largest hydraulic mine in the Union by following the trails through Malakoff Diggins Historic State Park. That’s where you’ll find the abandoned gold rush town known as “Humbug.”

A Beautiful Scar

The gorgeous cliffs of Malakoff Diggins stand as testimony to the environmental damage caused by the reckless greed for gold. While destroying the mountain here, the North Bloomfield Gravel Mining Company released tons of gravel and mud that clogged major rivers and turned productive farms downstream into desolate wastelands.

Meander Through Forests

Today, you and your beloved can relax as you meander past the majestic oaks, cedars, and pines that thrive in the Sierra Nevada foothills. For more ideas about hiking around Nevada County, check out the free maps of the trails around Nevada City on the Bear Yuba Land Trust website.

#2. Have Fun In The Snow

When the snow falls and hiking becomes impossible, what do you do? Simple! Stick snowshoes over your boots and keep going!

Strap Into Snowshoes

If you’ve never snowshoed before, you’ve missed a treat. Snowshoes enable you to hit those hiking trails when everybody else has given up and gone into hibernation for the winter. Don’t own a pair? No problem rent snowshoes from Nevada County’s gear shops and explore the Tahoe National Forest surrounding Truckee for FREE

Learn From The Pros

If you’re not confident about using snowshoes, don’t worry. You can take introductory lessons from experts at several ski resorts around Nevada County, such as the Royal Gorge Cross-Country Resort. Royal Gorge also features dedicated snowshoe trails that provide stunning views of snowy ravines and old-growth trees.

#3. Go A Little Faster

If you and your partner want to speed things up a little, why not try classic cross-country skiing? Royal Gorge offers 32 miles of groomed, tracked trails and beginners’ classes to get you going. Once you’re up and running, you can rent skis, snowshoes, and other state-of-the-art equipment from Royal Gorge or any other ski resort around the county. The resort even has dog-friendly trails so furry best friend won’t feel left out.

#4. Try A Get Rich Quick Scheme

Okay, we lied. You won’t get rich. But experts estimate 80% of the gold mother lode in the Sierra Nevada hills still remains hidden away just waiting to be found. So why don’t you try your hands at gold panning for a fun day out?

If you want to learn how to sift gold from gravel, grab your partner and head on down to South Yuba River State Park. During the summer months, resident docents will demonstrate how the ‘49s used metal pans to find treasure in the Yuba River.

You can get step-by-step panning lessons from the docents while at the same time learn about the history of the area and the California Gold Rush. Once you’ve perfected your technique, it’s time to hit the Yuba River and search for gold. And when you find the next Fricot Nugget, remember…finders keepers!

#5. Go Joyriding

Image appears courtesy: NEVADA COUNTY NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD MUSEUM

There are few forms of transport more romantic than a train, and you and your beloved can view a magnificent collection of old steam engines and rolling stock at the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Transportation Museum.

This small but fascinating museum provides a tour through the rail yard and restoration workshop where you can see dedicated volunteers restoring treasures from steam’s golden years. There’s also a free and fun railbus ride that runs on Saturdays only. However, this joyride is very popular and you must book in advance with the museum.

The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad was an important link to the wider world during the California Gold Rush. When the President of the railway passed away in 1901, his wife, Sarah Kidder, became the first female railroad president in history. She lived in an opulent mansion in Nevada City, the ruins of which you can still see today.

#6. Check Out The History In Nevada City

Image appears courtesy: Nevada City Chamber Of Commerce

Have you ever wandered around the streets of Nevada City? The Nevada City Downtown Historic District is awash with 70 fantastic historic structures. The buildings within the 16-acre district date from between 1856 and 1917.

One of our favorite buildings is the Firehouse No. 1 Museum, with its stunning bell tower and Victorian façade. In 1861, this was the home of horse-drawn fire wagons and handcarts. Now it serves as a museum operated by the Nevada County Historical Society and is the most photographed building in Nevada City. The museum holds many of Nevada County’s hidden treasures including a Nisenan exhibit offering a wide range of cultural items including watertight baskets, ceremonial feather dance collars, arrowheads, hand game bones, pounding stones and an extensive photo display.

#7. Go To The Theater

Another building of special note in Nevada City is the Nevada Theatre, opened in 1865. This is where Mark Twain lectured before he became famous and the first silent movies in the county were shown. Some interesting people have entertained the public in this popular venue, including the heavy metal rockers Mötley Crüe.

Nevada Theatre is still entertaining the masses today. You can watch a play or listen to a live concert. Why not see if they have anything interesting in their schedule for your next date?

#8. Take To The Water

Donner Rim Trail on sunny summer day

Nevada County offers plenty of options for you and your sweetheart to play on the water. There are lots of lakes, reservoirs, and streams to choose from. And reputable organizations like Mountain Recreation provide kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUP) for rent.

Donner Lake in the Donner Memorial State Park is an alpine lake that is especially popular for both fishing and water sports. Why not take your rented kayak or SUP there?

What Are You Waiting For?

As you can see, there’s lots for you and your darling to do in Nevada County. So, forget about that tired old movie theater or bowling alley and get over to Nevada County. Now you have 8 Date Ideas Under $50 In Nevada County. Do something interesting for a change!

Winter is here but that doesn’t mean you need to put away your bike. Rather, it’s the perfect time to enjoy “hero dirt.” Here’s everything you need to know about winter mountain bike trails in Nevada County.

Say No To Mud

Just Say No To Mud

There’s a BIG difference between hero dirt and muddy conditions. Hero dirt is what it sounds like, soft enough that your tires can dig in and get great traction, but not too soft, that it is slick or muddy. If your mountain bike tires leave a rut the size of Grand Canyon, you’re on the wrong trails. Give the soil a chance to dry a bit. In-town trails soil composition with more clay (i.e. Hirschman’s, Tribute, etc) are a no-go after rain. For more as to why it’s crucial – Say No To Mud This Rainy Season.

Below White Cloud Is Average Demarcation Line

winter biking trails in Nevada county at sunset
Image appears courtesy: You Bet Bike Shop

Over the last decade, the mountain bike trails below the White Cloud Campground are normally snow free all winter long. The campground is right off of Highway 20 eleven miles east of Nevada City. Situated at approximately 4,200 feet in elevation, this provides access to routes such as Pioneer and Hallelujah trails. A little lower you’ll also find the newest addition—the Talon Show, as well as Scotts Flat trail just to name a few.

Where To Find The Latest Trails Report

Example of daily snapshot from Harmony Ridge webcam on BONC website

A good place to start is to visit the Bicyclists of Nevada County (BONC) homepage. Due to the volume of people asking if the trails are snow-free, they’ve set-up a webcam on Harmony Ridge. Clicking the most recent “weather report” shows the day’s view as well as snapshots of the previous days. Seeing brown here isn’t a guarantee there won’t be some snow on Talon or Scotts, but seeing snow will guarantee they won’t be good riding. Trailforks is another resource to give you an idea of the conditions. BONC typically updates both Scotts and Talon Show reasonably often.

Fat Biking – Go For A Mountain Bike Ride On Snow

person fat biking on snow in Truckee California
Image appears courtesy: Northstar California Resort – Visit Truckee-Tahoe

For those looking for a change, another option is to try the sport of fat biking. Look to the upper elevations of Truckee-Tahoe for some winter recreation of the two wheel kind. Fat bikes have frames that are specifically designed to fit around wider, squishier tires allowing you to ride comfortably on snow, sand, and all the variable conditions in between. When the conditions are less than ideal for skiing or snowboarding, that’s the perfect time to go fat biking. Think of it as the yin to skiing’s yang.

Where To Try It

For those interested in trying fat biking on groomed snow trails, you can rent a bike for a half-day at Northstar at Tahoe and shove off on their 35 kilometers of groomed trails perfectly sculpted for fat tire biking. Want a bit “wilder” experience? The Sawtooth trail network or Boca Reservoir area are a great spots to find an adventure. For the latest in higher altitude fat biking conditions, check out the Fat Bike Truckee Tahoe Facebook group.

Biking in Nevada County isn’t just an activity, it’s a passion. We guarantee that if you Saddle Up To Nevada County’s Mountain Bike Trails in any season, you’ll have a blast.

Since the Gold Rush brought wealth to the county, entertainment has had a foothold in the region. Names like Mark Twain and Jack London have graced its stages. It hasn’t stopped there either. The extraction of gold may have faded, but the arts have quickly become the new wave that has brought both visitors and residents here. Annual events such as the Sierra Storytelling Festival and Wild and Scenic Film Festival showcase the local talents along with national ones. The towns of Nevada City, Grass Valley, and Truckee are filled with art galleries and local shops displaying artists’ skills. And one of the best ways to really experience the culture of Nevada County is by going to one of the many theatres in our area. Here are some of the more popular theatres of Nevada County.

“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”

Love Local Trails? Say No To Mud This Rainy Season https://gonevadacounty.com/say-no-to-mud-this-rainy-season/ Tue, 13 Dec 2022 23:52:04 +0000 https://gonevadacounty.com/?p=870 Winter in the Sierra Nevada means one thing regardless of elevation – it’s our “rainy” season, be it frozen or

Winter in the Sierra Nevada means one thing regardless of elevation – it’s our “rainy” season, be it frozen or of the liquid kind. And as any resident knows, precipitation in the Sierra comes in HUGE storms soaking the ground beyond its limit. We ask you as a responsible traveler or local to check the trail conditions ahead of time. You can call the park ranger or look at the open space or park website.

Muddy Isn’t Tacky Dirt

Mountain bikers will tell you moisture is a crucial component for creating what is called “hero dirt.” This is when just a little bit of moisture comes, and the dust packs down on the trail. But just like Goldilocks and the three bears, there’s a big difference between dry “hero dirt” and muddy ground. When storms deposit inches of rain like the Sierra typically receive or up high when the snow melts in the spring, the ground becomes over saturated. Rather, it’s a sloppy mess.

“We are appreciative that you use our trails, however when the trail surface is displaced it creates maintenance and erosion issues. During wet conditions please find a hard surface trail until soggy trails can drain and dry sufficiently for use.”

BYLT’s Trails Coordinator, Shaun Clarke

A Faux Pas… Stay Off The Trail Until It Dries Out

When you hop on your horse, bike, or even hike in these muddy conditions, there’s a good chance you’ll be affecting them in a negative way. Trails will become wider, create unnecessary erosion, and even create higher maintenance costs. Even though mountain bikers and horses can create the most destruction, hiker boots can also become a problem when people step around mud puddles and widen the trail.

Adding Risk As Well

Besides damaging the trail, hiking in a storm can be dangerous. Tree roots can lose their footing with flooding and rockslides. In a past storm on Banner Mountain, the Orene Wetherall Trail was closed temporarily after a slide. Wind storms can break branches and topple trees overhead as well. Volunteers can quickly correct many of these situations, but it’s a good idea to give the soil time to drain.

Enjoy Nevada County’s Culture Or Use An Alternative Trail

When the weather is frightful, it might be a better idea to take in Nevada County’s cultural scene. Sample world-class wines, savor a beautifully crafted cappuccino from one of our artisanal coffee shops, or just peruse our world renowned used book stores. If the weather is nice out and the soil still hasn’t had a chance to dry out, we recommend an alternative trail. This includes the Littleton Trail, the paved bike path around Western Gateway Park or the Hardrock Trail at Empire Mine State Historic Park.

As Chief Seattle once said, “If you want civilization to flourish, you must think seven generations ahead.” On your visit here, we hope you take his words to heart and ensure that Nevada County’s beautiful trails can be enjoyed not just today but for future generations as well.

Like a great recipe at a high-end restaurant, Nevada County’s towns are the perfect ingredients for a foodie getaway. A dash of funkiness. A pinch of artsy. Filled with Old West Saloons and historic homes. And scenic vistas of the High Sierra. Nevada County provides a perfect backdrop to explore the culinary arts in their utmost perfection. Here’s a taster of food you should enjoy when visiting.

Blast From The Past

A pasty from Marshall's Pasties
Instagrammer: @FriendlyWhenDrunk – One of the classic pasties you can enjoy in Nevada County

The historic hamlet of Grass Valley was built upon the gold mines of the Sierra Nevada. Due to the waning mineral deposits in their homeland of Cornwall, Cornish miners migrated to newer mines all over the world which included California’s Gold Rush towns including Grass Valley. By 1890, Grass Valley’s population was made up of 85% Cornish descent. While the mines have shut down, you can still honor the past and enjoy the quintessential food of Cornwall – Pasties. This scrumptious food is a handheld pie, usually filled with meat and potatoes, sealed under a crimped pastry crust. A few of the noteworthy locations are Marshall’s Pasties and the Grass Valley Pasty Company.

We All Scream For Ice Cream

Gourmet doesn’t even begin to describe the soft velvety ice cream you’ll find in Nevada County. Depending on where you’ll be playing or staying, you’ll find true artisans of the craft of ice cream making. In Nevada City, beeline to Treats where flavors include classics like mint chip to unique combinations such as saffron rose pistachio. For the upper reaches of Nevada County tucked alongside the gorgeous shore of Donner Lake you’ll find Little Truckee Ice Creamery. In their words, “Not just great ice cream, but super premium all-natural ice cream” all made in house that you’ll swoon over. Chocolate lovers will need to make a stop at Lazy Dog Chocolateria in Grass Valley. Not just an ice cream parlor but a buffet for the sweet tooth extraordinaire. If you visit during the winter months, be sure to try their savory hot chocolate.

So Good It’s Off The Hook

If you ask a local, “Where should I go for dinner?” many of them will say – Sushi In The Raw. Over the last two decades, their traditional approach to sushi and uncompromising focus on using the freshest ingredients has created a following like no other. If you aren’t into sushi, consider a visit to Twelve 28 Kitchen in the town of Penn Valley. This charming establishment can go toe to toe for food quality and presentation with many high-end restaurants in San Francisco. Speaking of elevated dining Truckee’s mountain cuisine scene covers the full spectrum from dietary restrictions to the discernible palate that everyone will be excited for. The newest addition is RMU. A newly certified California Green Business is situated in a historic building offering a bar, small bites, and events. For any of these, we highly recommend booking a table ahead of time.

Happy Smiles For EVERYONE

Nevada County’s dining options are all inclusive for any dietary restriction. For example, Vegetarians and Vegans alike will love the mouthwatering options at Nevada City’s favorite organic eatery – Heartwood Annex. Each of their ingredients are painstakingly chosen to reflect the region’s bounty of fresh, seasonal, and healthy foods. From ramen to grain bowls, you’ll be nourished and know that they did their best to ensure its sustainable.

This is merely a sampler of the foodie fun you will have when visiting Nevada County. Enjoy!

Scenic vistas, quiet river corridors, snow-capped peaks, California history, prime wildlife viewing, uncrowded trails and solitude in nature await those who venture out for some winter hikes in Nevada County. Remember to check the weather report, dress in layers, bring plenty of water and snacks, download your GPS maps, grab a hiking buddy and get ready for adventure.

Best Of Both Worlds

Nevada County offers the best of both worlds when it comes to outdoor playgrounds in winter. You’ll find exploring lower-elevation trails in the Yuba River watershed magical in the off-season. Trails are less populated, creeks and rivers are rushing with impressive storm runoff and you’ll find a stillness in the forest, a green lush wonderland bathed in soft light. Did we mention that birdwatching is prime? We recommend bringing a camera and binoculars and going quietly into the woods for the best wildlife viewing. Looking for a guided outing? Check out Inn Town Campground’s event calendar for upcoming guided hikes.

Where To Go Hiking

Woods Ravine on the Hirschman Trail

In the high country, when snow blankets the Sierra Nevada range, hikers can strap on a pair of snowshoes to enjoy alpine trails. Have you ever snowshoed by moonlight? Here are a handful of our favorite winter hikes in Nevada County to get you started. Please help us keep our trails beautiful by remembering to always pack out what you pack in!

Hirschman’s Trail & Pond

Nevada City
Difficulty: Easy Length – 4.8 miles

Located a short mile from the heart of historic downtown Nevada City, this accessible urban trail gets you quickly into a mixed conifer forest and the first .4 mile is wheelchair accessible. This one is great for families with young kiddos. Hirschman Pond is a bird-lovers paradise and if you’re lucky you might see a family of otters! Interpretive signs tell the story of this place named after pioneer miner Leb Hirschman and the environmental upheaval created by hydraulic mining more than a century ago. Visible are the giant boulders, exposed cliffs and a hummocky landscape shaped by giant water canons in the search for gold. For those who want a solid walk, keep following the trail past the pond to Woods Ravine and beyond. Check out Bear Yuba Land Trust, for a map and full trail description.

Deer Creek Tribute Trail to Angkula Seo Bridge

Nevada City
Difficulty: Easy – Moderate Length – 1.5 – 3 miles

Image appears courtesy: Inn Town Campground – Photo by: Erin Thiem Inn Town Campground

This popular trail is close to downtown Nevada City and is a perfect excursion after grabbing a quick coffee and scone. The popular swinging suspension bridge makes an ideal photo opportunity and the many interpretive signs along the way tell the story of the local Nisenan. Lots of interesting California native plants to identify. We recommend grabbing a plant identification or Nevada City history book at a local bookstore before heading out! Deer Creek Tribute Trail is part of a large network of trails and commemorates the Nisenan and the Chinese miners who worked the mines along Deer Creek during the gold rush. Find a map at Bear Yuba Land Trust.

Wolf Creek Trail

Grass Valley
Difficulty: Easy Length – 1.2 miles

One of the many things you’ll see on Wolf Creek Trail

This new out & back trail opened in 2018 and passes the North Star Mining Museum and Glenn Jones Park. The trail runs parallel to Wolf Creek and crosses Little Wolf Creek. Also known as Daspah Seyo Trail in recognition of the Nisenan who historically made this waterway their home. Learn more at BYLT and check out the good work of Wolf Creek Community Alliance.

Hardrock Trail Loop

Grass Valley
Empire Mine State Historic Park
Difficulty: Easy – Moderate Length – 2.4 miles

This popular trail for hikers, mountain bicyclists and equestrians weaves through Empire Mine State Historic Park, the site of one of the oldest, deepest, and richest gold mines in California. Conveniently located in Grass Valley, the park is a backcountry dream with 856 forested acres and 14 miles of trail. If you can, make time to explore the view at the top of Osborne Hill, the visitor center and beautiful Victorian-era grounds with an heirloom rose garden and the Bourne Mansion! Dogs are welcome on the trails but must be on a leash. Learn more about the park here.

Buttermilk Bend Trail

Penn Valley
South Yuba River State Park, Bridgeport
Difficulty: Easy Length – 1.2 miles

Image appears courtesy: Inn Town Campground – Photo by: Erin Thiem Inn Town Campground

A favorite in spring for the show-stopping wildflower display, this trail has a quieter, raw beauty in winter when the South Yuba River is rushing. Lots of California native plants if botany is your thing. Be sure to stop by the park’s visitor center for maps and plant identification guides. Keep an eye out for newts in the creeks. If you want a more strenuous workout, hop onto the Defiance Loop Trail. Don’t forget to check out the newly restored wooden covered bridge! Guided docent hikes are available Mid-March to Mid-May. Learn more about the park here.

Lake Loop Trail

Truckee
Donner Memorial State Park
Difficulty: Easy Length – 2.5 miles

Who says you can’t go hiking in the snow? Stop by one of Nevada County’s local mountaineering stores to rent or buy your own gear before heading out to the trail. Donner Memorial State Park is a great place to start, and easy enough to bring the whole family. The Lake Loop Trail follows the shoreline of Donner Lake, the “Gem of the Sierras” and provides jaw-dropping views of historic Donner Pass, Schallenberger Peak and Donner Peak. Look for eagles fishing in the lake and wildlife tracks from snowshoe hares, raccoons and foxes in the snow. For more experienced adventurers who want a longer hike, venture out along the Coldstream Trail in Coldstream Canyon, following the route of early pioneers on the California Trail! Find a map here.
